Ten things to know about your skin

Here at Black Skin Directory, were very grateful to be your first port of call for your skincare concerns. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously and over the years we’ve received so many of your questions, enough for us to develop our very own ten point Skin Appreciation Manifesto with everything we’d love you to know about your skin.

Our job is very much to educate you and make clever product suggestions, but it is also to empower and lend you confidence in your skin and what lies beneath it.

  1. The outward appearance of your skin doesn’t define you. Regardless of how your skin looks, your character will shine through. Good or bad.

  2. Genetics plays a big role in everyone’s skin. There will always be someone who you think has ‘better’ skin than you but remember comparison is the thief of joy.

  3. Your basic skincare routine would work for you and your lifestyle. Extensive and expensive routines that you can’t upkeep will become frustrating and redundant in the long run.

  4. The basic building blocks of any skincare routine are cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. Additional products depending on your skin concerns can be built around this trinity.

  5. Skin is very resilient and fragile at the same time, treat it with respect and don’t be unnecessarily harsh with it, because the fall out is never pretty to look at or easy to fix.

  6. It’s normal to have breakouts, visible pores, fine hair, blemishes and/or dark marks on the skin from time to time. This is the normal function of skin as a living and breathing organ.

  7. The gut, mind and skin triangle is a very real thing - the health and appearance of your skin is dependent on many internal factors, so chopping and changing your skincare products isn’t the quick fix you might think.

  8. Social media is not your personal skincare advisor. It’s a jump off into skincare and gives relative access to professionals but it’s not the final stop. A lot of what you encounter on social media is the experience and opinions of only one person.

  9. There is no shame in seeking medical help for your skin and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it.

  10. You never have to do skin alone, thats why Black Skin Directory exists - to connect you to unbiased skincare advice and professionals!
